Snapshots

A selection of photos from Snapshots, the first section of The Bowden Archives and Industrial Modernity. The photos were made whilst I was working on the Melbourne trams and after. It was New Zealand photographers who inspired me to become a photographer just before I left NZ to live in Australia and then to go to photography school (PSC) in Melbourne. These included Gary Blackman, Gary Baigent and John Fields.

The key NZ text for me re the emergence of personal photography was The Active Eye . Athol McCredie, the Curator of Photography at Te Papa Tongarewa in Wellington,NZ published a book in 2019 entitled New Photography: New Zealand’s First-Generation Contemporary Photographers’s, which tells the story of the beginnings of as art photography in New Zealand.
